The wheels spin furiously, the ute is truly tested on the edge of the mountain. The ascent begins. There is no map. Benjamin knows where all these intricate paths travel to. Each trail leads to a close friend and their story. Higher and higher you climb, Lempira disappears. Pacas, Bourbon, Catuai, Parainema varietals appear. A tiny community becomes visible. Small concrete houses neighboured with raised beds and solar driers appear. These are the true players in the Santa Barabra region. The energy is tantalising; rock stars, Cup of Excellence winners. They know their craft well. We twist and turn and arrive in Las Flores, home to the Fernandez Family.
This year it’s a celebration. Our sixth year working directly with Javier and his family. He produced 2 very special bags of Parainema (69kg each) for 2016 and the quality is amazing. Parainema is a complex varietal, known for its melon like taste. We transited the coffee in a reefer (refrigerated container) this year. This stabilises the temperature at 19 degrees and ensures the coffees quality, liveliness and longevity over time.
