About: This is the first coffee from Yemen that we have ever purchased, and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce you all to a country that has played such an important role in the history of coffee.
Coffee is deeply connected to Yemen’s history and the world owes much of its coffee culture to the little-known country. Although the coffee plant was discovered in Ethiopia, the coffee drink originated in Yemen. The roasted coffee bean is said to have been first consumed, as the drink we know today, in western Yemen in 1450 by the country’s Sufi monks, who used the drink to help them stay awake during all-night meditations.
The village of Aljidan has been growing coffee for over 400 years. Today, the total production is overseen by only 50 families who manage farms from 22m2 to 440m2. This lot placed 4th in Qima Coffee’s Best of Yemen auction with a score of 89.75. It is sweet and tea-like with a very complex flavour profile.
